Five experiences within thirty minutes of the villa — chosen by the hosts who actually live here.
Celorico de Basto isn't a tourist town, and that is precisely its charm. There is no main square cluttered with menus in five languages. There are vineyards, river beaches, granite churches and one very good bakery. Here is what we send guests to first.
1. Quinta da Aveleda or a small family producer. The Vinho Verde region is densely planted with vineyards, and most of the best wineries are family-run. Aveleda is the most polished tasting experience; for something smaller, ask us — we'll point you to a producer who'll pour you their own table wine in their cellar.
2. Praia fluvial do Tâmega. River beaches are a northern Portuguese summer ritual. The Tâmega has several within fifteen minutes of the villa. Bring a towel, a book, and a bottle of cold vinho verde.
3. Castelo de Arnoia. A small medieval castle on a hilltop, ten minutes by car. The walk up is short, the view is enormous, and you'll almost always have it to yourself.
4. Mosteiro de São Miguel de Refojos. A baroque monastery in nearby Cabeceiras de Basto — quietly one of the most impressive religious buildings in the region.
5. A long lunch somewhere unremarkable. Skip the tourist guides. Pull into the first roadside tasca that has more than three cars outside, order o prato do dia, and you'll eat better than you would in Porto.
